It’s too much asking IMO

in reply to post: iPhone's missing features

iPhone already bundled with hybrids of technologies, and it’s a risky business to duplicate a mini computer. Making such device with lots of capability may be good to hear, finally user experience is important. I think #1 is a must have one; Apple may change this in next version. I do agree with you all the points except #2, #8, #12, #13

#2 Adding plug-ins/Flash/Javascript is not only vulnerable, its consumes lot of memory, ultimately this would make the device very slow.

#8. Video chatting on mobile device? I recommend Apple to remove this camera from iPhone.

#12, #13 office and Exchange support, Apple doesn’t design this for Enterprise use. How many users want to read/edit office documents? may be less <5%.

Saravanan -

You make some good points, mostly that it's a consumer device, which I'll give you. (Despite the $500/$600 price points, that is.)

Personally I could give a rats @ss about Exchange. Don't use it, don't plan to. But opening and editing Word and Excel docs could be useful (although I almost never do it on my Treo now). I would bet (as I stated in my piece) that Apple allows Office support through some form of iWork mobile.

Video chatting could be the *ultimate* consumer application. Who uses IM the most?

And in terms of Flash, you need it for any of the video services these days (despite what Jobs thinks). And besides, insn't Dr. Schmidt (Google CEO) on the Apple board?? I'll bet anyone here an ice cream sundae at Mel's that it ships with a Flash-enabled version of Safari. How could it not?

Have we really resorted to betting on this stuff?

Good point

Fair enough, but then don't lie and tell everyone that the iPhone comes with desktop-class email, web browsing (http://www.apple.com/iphone/). Desktop class web browsing means plug-ins, Flash, and Java capabilities. Stop lying to us Apple and call it what it is: a severely crippled version of our OS and browser.

Apple does say just that "desktop-class email, web browsing." Which to me means Flash and Javascript. Every site uses them these days!

Am I off base here?

Demanding Apple is good for iPhone cunsumers
Jason,
I would bet that we do not see iWork mobile for at least 3 years. I guess, in theory Microsoft could come up with a Enterprise Mobile device, A light weight Zune (No video, only music) + t-Mobile + etc. But its also risk for them to do.

If I Compare stability of the device vs usefulness, stability is important. Its already bundled with enough useful services. Of course with bit more cost.

I guess iPhone already having video player component, Just JavaScript could play any video. There is no need for flash. Flash probably enabled if there is a Youtube deal. But Video chatting/YouTube on mobile device not going to happen for few more years. Due to mobile device nature (such as resolution, screen size, battery life, bandwidth etc). I don't think Apple would try for such a risky add-on service with mainstream service (music, phone, movie etc). Please note an important point "single point of failure" - If I loose my battery by seeing youtube video or video chat, I am loosing my important services (Phone, emails etc).

Apple would try to make as a Mobile widget platform where third party JavaScript could run with some restrictions ex: pre certified vendor widgets. But this will not happen for 2 more years. Mr.Jobs clearly stated that they are ahead of 5 years, so there is no competition for few more years. Why should they have to implement? Anyone going to buy iPhone for using few of those widgets or desktop class apps? No.

Do you want to use Word documents/Excel in iPhone? Again it’s vulnerable and consumes lot of memory. I have to install anti-virus as well. It involves customer support, badly affect mainstream services(ex: music, movie, Phone and browsing). Apple may design a widget to read/edit a txt document not more than that.

"Desktop-class email and browsing"
We should not take those words as it is. "Desktop-class email and browsing" means
* A light weight browser - We can browse web contents and participate little
* A light weight email better than other mobile devices, this is riche email and differs from desktop class emails. It can show you pictures, link etc. but we can't be used as a POP client.

Finally, if more than one company involving in one project, everyone try to push their service to gain more values. So All the features that we expect will be materialized slowly than we expect. Mr.Jobs also noted he has been waited for 2.5 yrs for that day, it means, he must have done hundreds of brainstorming, finally they made such an Optimized-hybrid device. I am sure they do not take any risk for 2 years. If I compare iPhone vs web 2.0 products, Apple has already released "iPhone alpha", beta will be released in June with very few firmware upgrade, we probably seeing a full-fledged browser and API for iPhone at the end of 2009. If Google builds a video chatting platform around YouTube then we may expect video chatting.
