Long tail - Grid computing is suitable for Head or Tail ? Part II

I previously blogged about on demand computing is suitable for tail – “Long tail - Grid computing is suitable for Head or Tail ?” This post is to complementing how the small business will get benefited from utility computing.

For any business, IT infrastructure is an essential element, to interact, collaborate with partners, customers and within enterprise. Often there is a myth that to have own IT infrastructure can meet business objectives, create customer trust, etc this is not true especially for small business, utility computing not only attracting direct financial benefits, its also offers a latest innovations and quality of service right away.

I am listing few services essential for most of the small business
* web server, database server - this includes hardware and software
* Security is very essential one, and creating such protected environment is not only software, hardware solutions also have to follows lot of best practices.
* Maintenance

So if small business wants to build such infrastructure, number one is full investment at the beginning, and maintenance cost, I don't think most of the small business this would be easy. I agree that there are few leasing finance alternatives but still there is a cost incurred. There are costs associated with power consumption by servers, network, AC, lighting, administration cost, dedicated staff etc

How many users care about in-house or offsite IT infrastructure? No one, IMO
How many tech persons are well to choose right platform? Its a critical decision to business, have to analyze competing products, purchase, install, test, placing in to production, etc.

Indirect Benefits
SMB can invest on critical business operations instead of in house IT infrastructure.
Very flexible for increasing/decreasing infrastructure,(ie: flexibility in scaling)

Flexible to upgrade to latest innovations. All these flexibility are realized instantly, with very close to zero time. Critical Business operations are 100% depends on these infrastructures, in case anything is not ready means? So its influencing critical business operations. There are lots of other indirect benefits as well, such as cash flow, growth, re-investment etc
